Promoting Roma’s political participation

19 March 2019, Brussels
On 19 March, ERIO organised a conference in cooperation with the European Parliament Vice-President Lívia Járóka titled “Empowering Roma’s political participation” which took place in Brussels during the Roma Week.

Within the context of the upcoming European elections, the conference aims to promote and encourage civic and political participation of Roma. This is no time for complacency. Eurosceptics and far-right movements are gaining momentum and their voters are very enthusiastic and active. This is the opportunity for the EU’s largest minority to vote and to ensure that the EU remains committed to human rights issues and Roma inclusion. Only by engaging with the candidates and actually voting can Roma concerns be heard, their interests represented, and their rights protected. Similarly important, is Roma’s civic participation and engagement at local level on Roma related policies.

The objectives of the conference were to:
  • Identify the reasons for the low level of civic and political participation of Roma, such as discrimination
  • Identify possible solutions to improve Roma’s political and civic engagement and exchange good practices
  • Energise Roma across Europe to vote during the European elections
