Remembering the Roma Holocaust

ERIO organised a conference “Remembering the Forgotten Roma Holocaust” on 25 January in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels.This conference was part of a wider project funded by the European Commission under the Europe for Citizens programme, Action 4 - Active European Remembrance. The project – done in partnership with Stichting Radio La Benevolencija Humanitarian Tools Foundation (Netherlands), Tolerance and Mutual Aid Foundation (Bulgaria) and Foundation "Remembrance, Responsibility and Future" (Germany) – aims to raise awareness about the history of Roma victims of Nazi persecutions and their current struggle against the backdrop of the European Union’s promotion of respect for human rights.

The objectives of this conference were to:

• Raise awareness about the Roma Holocaust
• Generate debate and reflection by linking the Roma persecution during Nazism and their ongoing discrimination
• Demonstrate the impact of the Roma Holocaust on today’s Roma and attitudes of non-Roma

The conference was held in English and Romanes translation was available.
