“Ending discrimination of Roma in employment: the role of Equality Bodies”

29 September 2017, Brussels
The European Roma Information Office (ERIO), in close cooperation with the European Network of Equality Bodies (EQUINET) invites you to attend a workshop with Equality Bodies, anti-discrimination experts and Roma representatives on 29 September 2017 at Rue de Ligne 37, 1000 Brussels, Belgium (room BREUGHEL, ground floor).

Roma often remain marginalized and sink into long-term unemployment and poverty because they face discrimination in the labour market. Research shows that a majority of Roma report to have experienced discrimination both when looking for work and in the workplace[1].

Article 15 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights reaffirms the freedom to choose an occupation and the right to engage in work. However, addressing the issue of discrimination in the labour market is not only a human rights imperative. It is also a smart economic strategy for countries that can use the economic potential of their Roma communities. Within the framework of the Racial Equality Directive 2000/43 (RED) and national laws on equal treatment, this workshop aims to:
  • Assist the work of Equality Bodies and anti-discrimination experts to end discrimination of Roma in employment
  • Discuss the main challenges faced by Equality Bodies in eliminating employment discrimination and any possible solutions/good practices they use to address them
  • Improve cooperation between Equality Bodies, Roma and civil society to end employment discrimination of Roma
